Landlords requiring the services of electricians to wire their houses are required to employ the services of the Energy Commission certified electrical professionals or face the refusal of the power utility distributors to acquire meters for the supply of power to their premises.

In addition, the work of the certified electrical professionals has to be inspected and tested by the Energy Commission’s certified electrical wiring inspectors to guarantee the safety of newly wired houses before the commencement of power supply.

A resource person at the Tropical Cable and Conductor Limited (TCCL), Elder Appiagyei Kwame Torto, made these known at a workshop for certified electrical professionals from the Brong Ahafo Region in Sunyani.

The workshop was organised by TCCL for the electricians and users of electrical cables and accessories to sensitise them to electrical safety, best wiring practices and inspection and testing of electrical installations.

 L.I 2012

Addressing the participants, Elder Torto said in conformity with Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2012, it was a requirement for houses to be wired by certified electrical professionals.

“It is, therefore, incumbent on landlords to verify to know whether the electricians whose services they engage have been certified by the Energy Commission.”

He explained that TCCL had decided to educate electrical professionals on best practices and the type of cables and accessories required for various parts of the country.

Elder Torto added that the coming into force of L.I 2012 had brought efficiency into how houses should be wired and urged the electrical professionals to be abreast of the provisions of the law.

NEDCo Engineer

In his remarks, the Sunyani Area Engineer of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), Mr Asare Koranteng, called on all electrical technicians to use proper tools to ensure their safety.

He cautioned Ghanaians to avoid overloading sockets to avoid damaging their gadgets.
